All nations of the world have their past and present. Each human wants to know, where come from and lived their ancestors. In the old time it was told: „Tell us your history and we will tell who you are”.

Almost two and a half thousand years has passed since a man by the name of Herodotus, who’s name can often be seen on the pages of Edexcel past papers history, has introduced people to his work. And thus, Herodotus became the first historian, and is called a father of history not by chance.

An interest to the past exists since the human kind exists. This interest can not only be described with human curiosity. The fact is that the man himself is a creature of history. It grows changes, develops with time and is a product of this development.

The original meaning of the word "history" goes back to the ancient Greek term meaning "investigation", "recognition", "establishment". The history was identified with the authentication, the truth of events and facts. In Roman historiography, the word came to signify not the way of recognition, but the story of the events of the past. Soon the "history" became known in general, as every story of any event, incident, real or fictional. Currently, we use the word "history" in two senses: first, to refer to the story of the past, and secondly, when it comes to the science that studies the past.

In the Ancient Greece, which has its own section in A level history Edexcel course word „history” meant any knowledge that was received by the way of research, but not only historical meaning in a modern sense. For example, Aristotle used the word in the "History of Animals". It also occurs in the Homeric hymns, the writings of Heraclitus and the text of the oath of the Athenian state. In the Ancient Greek language was a word historeîn „to research”, which in the beginning was used only in Ionia, where it then spread to the whole of Greece and, in the end, all the Hellenistic civilization.

History as a whole studies the past of the humanity, as well as individual sides of human activities, tendencies of historical process. It is an independent science, and has: it’s content, independent branches of historical knowledge, its functions, its methods and principles, their categories, laws and regularities. The content of history is a historical process, which reveals life of previous generations. This science considers the process of development of society as a whole, as well as analyzes the totality of the phenomena of social life.

Due to the fact that historians at the same time are observers and participants of the events, their works are written from the point of view of their era and usually are not only politically biased, but also share all misconecptions of their era. According to Benedetto Croce, "The whole story - modern history." Historical science provides a true account of the course of history through stories about events and impartial analysis. In modern times the story is created by the efforts of research institutions.

The "history" in one form or another is present in many sciences. For example, historical geography, economic history, social history, civil and military history. The story is divided into the world’s, the history of individual people and the history of the continents. History of the Fatherland is studying specific social and political systems, political relations and culture (material, social, political and spiritual) of a particular state.

The history on one hand refers to the humanitarian sciences, on the other - to the public sciences, but also can be viewed as the area between the humanities and social sciences. The study of history is often associated with certain practical or theoretical purposes but can also be a manifestation of normal human curiosity.

For a long period of time history was regarded as a science, and was referred to literature and art. Not by chance in Greek mythology, the patroness of history was considered as one of the Muses, she was depicted as a young woman with a soulful face, and a scroll of papyrus or parchment in hand. The name of the history muse was Clio, which came from Greek word meaning „to praise." Indeed, the first book of the chronicles was mostly devoted to the glorification and biographies of the rulers.
